February 16, 2012 | Health Disparities Symposium
In 1906, Atlanta University sponsored the, “Eleventh Conference for the Study of Negro Problems.” It was at this conference that W.E.B. Du Bois and his colleagues asserted that disparities in health between Black and White people were “not a racial disease but a social disease.” We now have an enhanced understanding of the health inequalities that confront people of color in both the U.S and globally. Regrettably, the imbalances discussed more than a century ago by Du Bois and his colleagues persist as biological, psychological, and social determinants of health.
It is in the tradition of W.E.B. Du Bois and other prominent researchers’ groundbreaking work on health disparities that we invite you to come to the Atlanta University Center to attend a Health Disparities Symposium sponsored by the Morehouse College Innovation Exposition taking place February 15-16, 2012.
In the following video, Drs. Wallace Sharif and Sinead Younge discuss the health disparities symposium being held as part of Expo 2012.
The purpose of this symposium is to gather students, researchers, practitioners, and community members from Historically Black Colleges and Universities to foster collaborations, discuss best practices for conducting research at or in collaboration with HBCUs, and the dissemination of research findings.
This workshop is open to all who are interested in health disparities research, including students, staff, faculty, researchers, and community members. The first part of the workshop will include poster presentations by conference attendees, followed by a conversation with pioneers in the field including William Jenkins, and ending with a networking and collaboration session.
Attendees will have the opportunity to connect with others interested in their own or related fields of study. After the workshop, an informal “Mixer” will take place for individuals to further dialogue.
Deadline: January 13, 2012 Poster Abstract Submission for the Health Disparities Portion ONLY Please send abstracts to syounge@morehouse.edu
